Electrician's Troubleshooting and Testing Pocket Guide

Electrical measuring and testing instruments are used in the installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of electrical systems of all types, particularly in commercial and industrial facilities. Scope of This Book
Electrician’s Troubleshooting and Testing Pocket Guide covers the use of digital multimeters (DMMs) and other testing equipment to troubleshoot electrical and electronic circuits used for power and control applications. In general, it concentrates on traditional electromechanical and inductive equipment found in commercial and industrial occupancies—motors, transformers, lighting, and power distribution equipment. In general, this guide does not cover testing and troubleshooting of the following types of equipment and systems:

Communications systems. The use of network cable analyzers, optical time domain reflectometers (OTDRs), optical power meters, and other equipment used for testing and troubleshooting communications systems such as telecommunications, computer local area networks (LANs), and outside plant fiber-optic installations are outside the scope of this publication.

Electronic components and systems. This book touches on testing of electronic components such as resistors, small capacitors, and diodes. However, the broad subject of troubleshooting electronic components and circuits using digital multimeters and other viiiportable test equipment is covered in much greater detail in a different McGraw-Hill publication:

The Possibility of Knowledge

This book is about how-possible questions in epistemology. A howpossible question asks how something is, or was, possible. Such questions aren’t necessarily philosophical. Students of British politics might wonder how it was possible for John Major to become Prime Minister in 1990 but this is a question for historians and political scientists rather than for philosophers. The how-possible questions that are of philosophical interest are metaphysical, ethical, or epistemological. So, for example, a philosopher might ask how freedom of the will is possible or how evil is possible or how knowledge is possible. The latter is an example of an epistemological how-possible question. The following chapters are about how this question arises and what a good answer to it would look like. The basic idea is very simple. We start by assuming that knowledge is possible but then come across apparent obstacles to its existence or acquisition. So the question is: how is knowledge, or knowledge of some specific kind, possible given the various factors that make it look impossible? On this account, how-possible questions are obstacledependent. Sceptics are people who think that the obstacles to knowledge are insuperable and that knowledge is therefore impossible. If we don’t want to end up as sceptics we will have to show that the alleged obstacles are unreal or that they can be overcome. Either way, it is the perceived obstacle that gives the how-possible question its bite. What would be an example of an obstacle to knowledge? It’s easier to get a sense of the problem in relation to particular kinds of knowledge, say knowledge of the external world. This kind of knowledge isn’t possible for us unless we have ways of knowing something about the external world, that is, viable sources of knowledge of the world around us. The absence of such sources would therefore be one obstacle. If this is the obstacle that triggers the how-possible question then it looks as though an effective response is going to have to operate at several
different levels: at one level, it is going to have to show that we do have at our disposal genuine ways or means of knowing about the external world. Second, any apparent obstacles to the acquisition of knowledge by the proposed means will need to be dealt with. Third, an account might be given of what makes it possible for us to come to know things about the world around us by these suggested means

The Adobe Photoshop Layers Book

This is a great book for Photoshop. I own several Photoshop books and this one is by far the best I have read so far. From the title you might think it is just for advanced users, since it seems to be rather specialized. Even the author seems to think only experienced users will read the book. That is all wrong.
By the time you have finished a third of this 250 page book, you will not only know the layers palette (there is a great diagram on page 6), and the layers menu. He sets out his idea of the thirty essential tools, commands, palettes, and menus that you will use most often (with shortcuts) all in easy to refer to tables on pages 35-41. There are some more tables for easy reference back in chapter 1.

If you do the exercises, in that same first third of the book you will have experimented with the creation, duplication, deletion, manipulation, and grouping of layers (of course), but also color correction, techniques for selecting objects; cutting, copying, pasting, and moving objects; color balance; and most importantly how all that can be organized with the use of layers. The rest of the book explores other aspects of Photoshop all in the context of layers.
What makes this book worth five stars is that he very clearly explains not only what is being done, but also the logic of what is being done. He uses layers to organize his work and explains this workflow method in some detail. Someone just starting with Photoshop could use this book to keep from falling into some bad habits that come from poking around, which is what some of the Photoshop books with more general titles seem to do.
The author does not take on too much, but enough to do anything you would normally want to do as a photographer. He also gives you the background from which you can explore beyond the book.
